A study conducted at an orthopaedic clinic in Taiwan and published online by the British Medical Journal dealt with the effectiveness of shiatsu treatments in improving back pain in terms of disability and perceived pain.
Back pains are the most common ailments, and it is easy to understand why.
A lot of professions require us to spend hours sitting in front of a desk or standing up for a long time. More often the rhythms of our daily life force us to pay too little attention to the needs of our body: we repeat the same movements or “non-movements” every day. Human beings are not meant to stand still or to sit for a long time. We are made to move in space and interact with the world around us. Causes of back pain can be postural, traumatic, inflammatory or even structural due to environmental conditions (such as cold, humidity), bad habits, physical efforts at work, sports performed incorrectly, or due to emotional or psychological blocks. They often manifest themselves with pain, which can be acute, dull, chronic, fluctuating, etc.
Problems such as stiff neck and neck pain, lower back pain, shoulders tensions – but also problems with circulation and digestion – are often caused by an excessively sedentary lifestyle that does not allow our energies to circulate freely. Fortunately, Shiatsu and acupressure massage come to our aid. Not only with the treatments but also with simple and relaxing exercises that you can do at home and that will prolong the benefits of a session and, on the other hand, will lessen the need for an intervention of the therapist. A frequently asked question is: how many treatments do I need to relieve my back pain?
Each person responds in a different way to the treatments. In my experience, I can say that sometimes one session brings significant improvements, whereas some other times a few treatments are required. It also depends on the pain’s origin. Of course, even when helping with back pain, the practitioner treats the receiver as a whole because the body and the mind are one interconnected set of anatomical and physiological elements and the real wellbeing can be only overall well-being. Even the Latin poet Juvenal once said “mens sana in corpore sano”, which means “healthy mind in a healthy body”. If you too would like to have a healthy body and spirit, or even if you only feel you want to know more about what I offer, shiatsu, and acupressure, I will be more than happy to help you.
